Had the same experience on Buffalo Gold at my local a while back — collected a decent stack of heads, feature paid sweet bugger all and I limped out down a few hundred A$. Worth remembering each venue runs its own RTP within the state minimum, so the club version can play tighter than the pub one down the road. Cleared a A$100 free games bonus off a modest float a few weekends back, only managed it by keeping the bet per spin small and walking the second it landed, cashing out in time is everything with this one, the heads pile up and most nights you're just paying rent on them. 😅
As for pub vs club tuning, I honestly don't think it's worth arguing. Same machine, same cruelty, some nights it hits and some nights it just eats your bankroll. @Gramps_AllDay a A$100 bonus off a modest float is a decent arvo, no argument there. But one fired session doesn't tell us much when the same bloke probably fed three dead ones before it and didn't bother posting about those. That's how the memory works, the win sticks, the losses blur.
For what it's worth, walking the second it landed is the only part of your method I rate. The rest is just variance wearing a strategy costume. Post a photo of the ticket next time and I'll happily eat my words.
